The name is derived from the Latin word ruber, meaning ‘red’. The ruby gemstone was referred to as the "King of Precious Stones" in ancient India due to its captivating beauty, rarity, durability, and what appeared to be supernatural powers. Ruby is often associated with life, hence the rich colour that resembles blood.
Apart from that, Europeans in the middle ages believed that rubies bring prosperity, success, love, health, and wisdom. Burmese warriors, however, claimed that it rendered them invincible in combat. Some even thought the July birthstone could foretell misfortune or danger, while others thought it could treat inflammatory illnesses and calm raging emotions.
Rubies are traditional gifts for those celebrating their 15th or 40th anniversary as they have an eternal flame that symbolises the intense passion in a marriage that is still burning even after years together.

In the 1970s, Queen Elizabeth II’s Burmese Ruby Tiara was made from a combination of diamonds from the Nizam of Hyderabad and Tudor-style roses of Burmese rubies. The King Edward VII Ruby Tiara was Crown Princess Margareta of Sweden’s wedding gift in 1905, gifted by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom.
Another well-known jewellery piece was the Van Cleef & Arpels ruby set given to Queen Sofia of Spain as a wedding gift by shipping magnate Stavros Niarchos. The set comes with a bandeau that can be worn with one or two strands of diamond and ruby clusters connected by diamond leaves.
