Amethyst - The Enchanting February Birthstone

Let us uncover the mystical powers and meanings behind one of February’s enchanting birthstones, amethyst. If you’re born in February, or perhaps a lover of purple and plum shades, then this journal entry is for you.

Amethyst Gemstone’s History, Legends & Meanings

The name “amethyst” derives from the Greek word amethystos, which means “a remedy against drunkenness,” a benefit which has long been associated with the February birthstone by Ancient Greeks. Interestingly, due to its wine-like colour, early Greek mythology also associated the amethyst birthstone with Bacchus, the God of Wine.

The amethyst gemstone has a symbolism that’s strongly tied to love and spirituality. For decades, wearers claimed amethyst could keep them clear-headed and enhance intelligence in battles and business affairs. On top of that, its calming presence was thought to provide pleasant dreams and bring peacefulness and clarity to the waking mind.

The Ancient Egyptians, however, used amethysts in prayer rituals and as protection amulets. As for Renaissance Europeans, they believed this precious purple gem calmed lovesick individuals who are overwhelmed with passion.

Speaking of love, even Saint Valentine adores the dazzling amethyst gemstone. The patron of love is said to have worn a beautiful amethyst ring carved with the image of Cupid. Amethyst is also traditionally given for the sixth wedding anniversary.

Amethyst In Fine Jewellery

The colour purple has long been considered a regal and noble shade, so it’s no surprise amethyst gems often appear in royal and religious jewellery.

At one point, only royals could wear this enchanting gemstone. Perhaps the most well-known royalty to adorn amethyst gems is Catherine the Great of Russia. Her majesty had a penchant for the February birthstone and decked herself in a lavish collection of amethyst jewellery such as necklaces, earrings, and other accessories.

The colour of amethyst ranges from pale lilac to deep reddish purple. If heated, this gem can change to colours like green, blue, yellow, and red-orange. These heated gems, though, would no longer be considered amethyst, but rather a different-coloured quartz variety.

With a Mohs Hardness rating of 7, the February birthstone is ideal for everyday jewellery. The amethyst has captivated many for decades, and it still continues to do so today.

Amethyst As A Birthstone

Calling the quirky Aquarians and compassionate Pisces babies because it’s time to celebrate your birthday!

Aquarians are incredibly adventurous and passionate humanitarians. They’re all about making the world a better place. But they’re also stubborn and rebellious in nature. They may also come across as aloof or emotionless. Pisces-borns are often gifted in arts and possess a well of empathy. Their downside? They can be pessimistic and too sensitive. At times, they may even get lost in their own daydreams.

If you were born in February, then wearing amethyst can be a symbol of personal empowerment and inner strength. The soothing purple shades will calm anxiety and anger to give you, February-borns, peace of mind.

Bonus: since February is a month of love, having amethyst with you is perfect for manifesting ‘The One’ if you’re single and ready to mingle. *wink*
